The district that I work in is starting a sensory room, but, with limited funding, we are unable to purchase all of the supplies needed to benefit the students. The variety of fidgets I am requesting will assist with attention to task and decrease frustration for students who just need more movement throughout the day. These fidgets are small and allow the students to manipulate them while sitting at their classroom desk. The cushions I am requesting will allow my students to wiggle more in their chairs without being distracting to their peers. The Theraputty has a variety of resistances and will help students develop motor/hand strength and coordination. It has different resistance which is appropriate for the varied fine motor strength my students have. The therapy ball also has multiple uses including allowing a student to bounce on it for increased movement. It can also be used to roll on a student’s back while the student is lying down for increased input and a calming massage feeling. The scooter board can be used for increasing core strength, calming the mind and body for increased attention and organizational skills and allowing input into the hands and feet for increased body awareness. The Feel and Find set is good for tactile input to help students who might be hyposensitive to certain textures. They may tend to crave the touch of different textures. This will help increase their attention and focus on the teacher. The lycra stretch band is good for proprioceptive input that encourages kids to move and learn. We can use the lycra stretch band with the scooter board and encourage the students to sit upright and pull themselves for an increased sensory input. Wikki stixs are great for visual motor integration, sensory input through tactile exploration, letter formation, attention and concentration, motor planning and fine motor skills.
