Be a Pro Learner With iPad Pro
Funded Mar 2, 2022Having this iPad Pro is enhancing learning in my classroom by changing the way I am able to be out with my students. It has gone from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered classroom. I am able to teach from my iPad and move around to engage with my students' learning instead of being tied to a whiteboard.
One way we have used the iPad is as a portable document camera. I can connect the iPad to my projector using AirPlay. Once it is connected, I can pull up any app to project for my class. I have been using some apps called the Math Learning Center. I had my students do math problems on their whiteboard and then I could use this app to demonstrate base ten blocks as I am walking around the room.
Another way I like to use the iPad when projected is to have students demonstrate their work. I can go to the camera app on the iPad and using AirPlay, have the students show their work live. This is life-changing in a classroom! No more having a student come to the board and try to replicate their work. The camera app makes my iPad become a portable document camera. My students all want to be spotlighted and have the opportunity to show their math thinking to the class. This has even helped management because my students want to be chosen as the one to share their thinking with the class.
I have also been using the iPad during small group instruction. I can pull up a whiteboard app and demonstrate how to decode words or practice a phonic skill. This is helpful because students can easily see my work. I can also pre-build content for students and then they can also interact with it at my back table. I have found it is even helpful to save the work we do and come back to it the next day. I have been experimenting with different apps to do this and I really like the features of Notability so far. I am excited to see what other ways I can utilize this iPad with students!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Valhalla Foundation and 2 other donors.iPads For 2nd Grade
Funded Oct 27, 2016Thank you for funding our project for two classroom iPads! My students are thrilled to have these iPads available to them throughout the day. It has opened up the doors to new possibilities that weren't previously available to them. One of the classroom favorites has been learning to code using our Dash robots. Coding is the career of the future and one of the best ways to learn this is from robots. I want to expose my 2nd graders to coding while they are young and help them gain skills that will help them in the future, and this grant has made it possible!
One of the best parts to having this new technology is that students can access educational apps that will expand their learning. Throughout the day, students use the iPads in practicing sight words, handwriting, adding, subtracting, and utilizing other 2nd grade educational apps. In addition to using apps, we have been utilizing the iPads as e-readers which allows us to use online books during reading centers. It has been a great way for students to choose reading material that interests, listen, and follow along with the narrator. Several students that are below grade level in reading, or unable to read books on their own, are now able to listen to online books and be exposed to grade level texts.
Our school has licenses for Imagine Learning, Raz-Kids and MyOn Reading and the iPads have allowed the students to utilize these programs for individualized reading. My students love having access to digital libraries that consist of thousands books, texts, and articles; using these different reading apps on our new iPads enhance their reading experience. Effective learning happens when students are engaged and interested; the students love to use the iPads to access reading material that is individualized to their interests.
We are so appreciative of your donation and cannot wait to see what other opportunities present themselves as the students continue to explore and learn in the coming months.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Nelson
