Basketballs & Volleyballs for Low Equipment Gym
Funded Dec 3, 2016Thank you so much for your donation. We are using the basketballs in our basketball unit to practice our dribbling, passing, and shooting. Our students are working on developing the appropriate skills needed to play in a full court game of basketball. Some of our older students who learned theses skills in past years of physical education are putting the skills into play in games such as spot shot and line basketball. These games help to develop teamwork, and implement the rules of basketball. The volleyballs will be used next unit to help students develop the bump, set, spike, and serve skills. Our younger kids will focus on learning the cues to these skills to perfect them later on in their education. They will use teamwork to keep volleyballs in the air as well as communicate with each other who is hitting the ball next. These re all skills my students need to succeed in physical education and in school as well as outside of school! My older students will put the skills to use in full court volleyball games. They will learn about positioning and the rules of volleyball.
Our students were so thrilled to see new equipment. A lot of our equipment is old and torn. Our students love basketball and are constantly asking to use the balls to practice. I cannot wait to start the volleyball unit with them. They are excited to try something new, and are looking forward to using the new equipment!
We are hoping to use the new equipment to hold a staff versus student basketball game! The students love the competition and to show off their skills. We're also going to create teams with the older students and play a volleyball tournament at the end of the unit. They love the camaraderie and to play with and against friends. Thank you again for helping to make this happen!”

Just Dance!- Exercise Through Video Games.
Funded Dec 24, 2016Thank you so much for your donation. We are now able to use the projector that we've purchased with your donation to integrate technology in our physical education class. We hooked the Wii up to the projector and had our students play Just Dance, it was so much fun! The projector displays the game on the wall to that all of our students can see the moves and follow along. Dance is a great form of exercise and a great way for our students to express themselves. We are a Turnaround Arts school which means that we encourage and support our students in expressing themselves and their knowledge through the arts and this is a perfect way to do that!
This projector will be used in the future to give students visuals of different skills they may be learning as well as to show them vocabulary words and objectives of the lesson so that they are easily seen. My students were most excited to be able to play video games in class! A lot of them have played this game at home, and loved that they knew some of the movements and made the connection form home to school. A lot of my students took what they learned home and taught their siblings the moves to the dances. We talked about how dance is a form of exercise they can do at home to stay healthy.
I have students who feel shy and embarrassed to play the typical sports. They feel as though they are not as good as the other students, and do not want them to make fun of them. When we used this technology and played some Just Dance, they flourished and felt confident in this type of exercise! They loved expressing themselves in this way, and got a great work out out of it! We had a blast.
Thank you so much again; we are extremely grateful for your donation and are putting the projector to good use!”
