A year and a half ago I created a new experiential learning experience for the students in my school. It is called Channel 17 News. Our district is Maine School Administration District #17 hence the title. I work with a group of anywhere from 20 to 25 students each Friday to digitally tell the story of our school and our community. It has garnered a lot of attention in our building and within the schools in our district. My students want to expand their horizons and begin to move out into the community and tell the story of our eight towns, the Oxford Hills. Currently the students share the few cameras and memory cards that we have, and they are restricted to filming in areas where they have access to electrical power. Their is also a lot of wait time while the cameras and memory cards that we have are in use. The items that we have selected will not only allow us to expand beyond the four walls of our building, but they will make the learning experience available to more students. My numbers are limited by the amount of equipment that I currently have. This year I had 58 students apply for six spots. I stretched my number to nine to accommodate a few more but we are currently beyond our maximum due to equipment constraints. My Middle School News Quest Students thank you for any help you can give us!
