As I welcome my 9th graders this school year and introduce them to high school, many of them will be excited, nervous, and/or concerned. They will anxiously await everything that high school has to offer them over the next four years. However, having proper school supplies should not be one of their worries or concerns. Ensuring that every classroom has the basic essentials to thrive in the 21st century will help level the playing field for students living in poverty. My students will use the items donated to this project daily as we explore the world of algebra. We use index cards for note-taking, and as a helpful study tool. My students will use clipboards as they work around the classroom while collaborating with classmates for math assignments and projects. Copy paper, cardstock, and tape are needed for student math journals. My students consume many basic classroom materials while completing interactive math journals. Expo markers will be used regularly as students practice math concepts. Golf pencils are a practical solution to the very common "I don't have a pencil" epidemic among students. Lastly, Clorox wipes will keep our classroom in proper working conditions conducive to learning. I will creatively incorporate these items into my lessons to make math meaningful and interactive, as well as, create a safe and welcoming learning environment for every student.
