Can you remember a time, when you walked into a school and you felt welcomed? You just had a hunch that it was a place dedicated to the betterment of the community and learning was taking place with staff that cares about the community they served. This was evident by their rooms, offices, centers, and/or labs filled with print-rich material and an environment that felt like a warm and inviting place to be. For many of our special needs students, school can be a very intimidating/humiliating place as students and sometimes parents struggle with the stigma associated with "special education". Here at Roosevelt Middle School, we are hoping to change that stigma by transforming our Special Education Conference Room into a center that feels like home. When parents come into their annual IEP meetings, it can be an intimidating and confusing experience but with an environment that is safe and friendly, it is our hope that the conference room will contribute to family's feeling cared for and appreciated here at Roosevelt Middle School. Everyone will want to be a part of the SPED community! The items requested like carpet, bean chairs, and book shelf will serve to bring life to the space by providing a learning corner for little siblings to learn through play as well as serve as a book corner for special education students seeking a place to develop a love for reading .
