  • Big Books For Little Learners!

    Funded Jan 19, 2018

Sometimes, bigger really is better ! As you can see from our photos, the big books that we were able to purchase, thanks to you, have captured the attention of my students in a big way. The children are enjoying the stories and learning about the concepts of print. The new books have also inspired art projects and dramatic play.

One of the things that my students enjoy doing is using my special pointer to track print from left to right across the page, as they know good readers do. They are able to point to specific letters and identify some punctuation marks. Many are able to distinguish between upper and lower case letters and numbers. All can identify the cover, the spine and the back of a book and can turn pages one at a time. It is so much easier for children sitting farther away to see the print, because it is so large.

We have come a long way in a short amount of time and have learned a lot about the mechanics of reading. The best thing, though, about these big books is that they have helped the children to think of themselves as readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lubinsky

  • Art Inspired by Literature!

    Funded Dec 16, 2016

Maya Angelou once said, "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." There should be a picture of the Rose Hill Pre-K Center students accompanying that quote.  Through your generosity, our children have been exposed to an amazing array of art materials that have increased their creativity exponentially! Whether it's using the pattern scissors, sculpting with clay or blowing paint on paper, joy and creativity abound! Children who had little interest in art before (perhaps because they were limited to crayons and white paper) are now finding their inner Picassos'! The art center is now the first choice for many of the children during "choice time" thanks to you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lubinsky

As the Literacy Cluster Teacher, I visit 3 classrooms daily to read stories and engage children in nursery rhymes, finger-plays, felt-board stories and music & movement. After, I provide various art materials to facilitate open-ended art inspired by the day's literature. Coloring outside of the lines and painting purple pumpkins are the order of the day! Inspired by "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus"? We need feathers! Inspired by "It Looked Like Spilt Milk"? We need finger-paints! Inspired by Eric Carle's collages? We need tissue paper! My goal for my students is for them to become confident artists and familiar with a wide variety of art materials. It is my hope that they create without being restricted by directives from me or other adults. I want them to think outside of the box!
