Being comfortable allows students to stay vested in the task, and their behavior is equally positive. They are willing to work with others, share ideas and move around the room. Adding additional seating options will empower my students to choose the best way for them to work. Additionally, we need sturdy storage for our journals and workbooks now that we have eliminated desks from our classroom.
Students learn best when they have some control over their environment; flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and to change their position. Students learn better through collaboration. Flexible seating lends itself well to pairings, small group work, or whole class discussions. When children cannot move, they become distracted or disruptive. Flexible seating allows students to appropriately bounce, fidget, lean, stand, kneel, and sit to suit their needs. Uncomfortable students tend to be distracted and unproductive. Comfortable students are calm, focused, and productive.Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch, and this kind of stimulation can help students focus. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with attention challenges.
The wobble stools and yoga balls will be beneficial to students that need movement to be able to focus and be productive. They will also allow students to fine tune their gross motor skills as they are working and learning to control their bodies. This will allow students to be comfortable and appropriately bounce and lean to support their attention and focus. The storage bins will allow us to store our materials more efficiently and cut down on lost instructional time during transitions.
