  • Sports Writing and Marketing: Writing about Heroic Quests

    Funded Mar 31, 2023

Thank you all for the generosity in bringing this project to the students at Central High School. These books will help to develop a new program in sports writing and marketing and will develop interest for our students in a growing field in the English literature program.

    My students thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hover

  • Great Philadelphia Theater for Great Philadelphia Students

    Funded Dec 30, 2019

I am overjoyed to share this news going into the new year. In less than two months, close to three dozen individuals stepped up to donate money to support an excursion for my students to attend a great theatrical production by a wonderful living playwright at a premiere theater.

This event promises to be an experience that my students will never forget and this is possible because of your generosity.

Thank you and many blessings to you in the coming year.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hover

  • Great African Writers for Great Philadelphia Students

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

Thank you all for your generous donations. Donors, like you, help teachers to do their best through the acquisition of necessary resources for the classroom.

My students will greatly benefit from your generosity and the books will help develop a new generation of international minded students. For the academically driven students that I teach, the texts will serve as excellent points for discussion and allow the students to learn through the complexity of the dialogue.

Thank you again for fully funding this project.

    Sincerely,

    Mr. Hover”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hover

  • Parable of the Teacher's Need: Octavia Butler and Philadelphia Students

    Funded Aug 5, 2018

I am continually astounded by the generous donations of friends, family, former students, and so many of the alumni of "Dear Old High." Because of your generosity,, my students will have the ability to read high-quality, relevant, culturally distinctive Afro-futuristic and dystopian literature.

Not only will my students enjoy the contemporary aspects of the literature, but also they will be able to link Parable of the Sower with the literary canon, which is an established part of the English curriculum.

Again, my own words fail to express the gratitude for your continual generosity, so I will leave you with the Bard himself, William Shakespeare, "I can no other answer make but thanks, and thanks, and ever thanks."”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hover

  • World Class Theater for World Class Students

    Funded Jan 25, 2018

The students from my classroom witnessed a fantastic exhibition of theatrical expertise on the part of the actors and emotionally moving performance of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. In particular, the actor who played Pecola Breedlove astonished my students with her ability to inhabit the character of this insular, emotionally stunted girl. After the show, the students asked penetrating questions in a talk back with the actors and realized the depth of the actors' ability in portraying the various aspects of the play. The play provided an excellent example of inter-textual analysis between drama and a novel. Thank you for the opportunity to attend.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hover

  • Stellar Shakespeare Trip

    Funded Nov 8, 2016

I want to personally thank each and every one of you for contributing to the "Stellar Shakespeare Trip" to see "Othello: The Re-mix." The trip to New York and the production of "Othello: The Re-mix" allowed my students to see the relevance and contemporary impact of William Shakespeare on the current theatrical scene.

After the trip, my students engaged in a Socratic Seminar where they evaluated the choices made by the director and writers in updating the script. For my students, they used the discussion to critique the production and demonstrated excellent understanding of the original script and also appreciation of the original material. By creating the comparison, the students showed a sophisticated discernment that could only occur through actual participation as an audience member at the production in New York.

The real world participation in the cultural event of attending "Othello: The Re-mix" allowed my students to develop and nurture a respect and love of theater.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hover

Through the acquisition of a classroom set of Parable of the Sower, my students will be able to access relevant, contemporary literature written by an African-American Female Writer to complement traditional English Literature. Although my students have access to traditional materials, new literature needs to be purchased to reflect the demographics and interests of the students in the class. With this acquisition, my student will have the ability to read contemporary Afro-futuristic literature. By reading The Handmaid's Tale, The Canterbury Tales, and Parable of the Sower, my students will be able to observe, analyze, and synthesize the works of writers from the 13th to the 21st century.
