  • Starbooks Cafe

    Funded May 6, 2020

Due to your generous donations, we were able to provide the students at La France Elementary school the opportunity to "taste" new books. The book tastings allow students the chance to experience new characters that they can relate to. It is wonderful to see the excitement on a child's face when they say, "Hey this character is just like me!" We hold book tastings once a month before school. Students can borrow the book to read and when they are finished they return it to the box outside of my office. The first step in getting children to read is finding books that interest them. When they see characters that they can relate to, they are more likely to pick up the book and have a deeper connection with it. Thank you for your support in making this happen for our students!”

    With gratitude,

  • Organize It!

    Funded Nov 15, 2017

Thank you for your contributions to my classroom. Your donations allowed me to purchase a cart, laminating supplies, and card stock to create fun learning games for my students to review math concepts. The students get so excited when it is time for math centers because they want to check out all of the new games and activities for them to complete. My students' tests scores have gone up thanks to the daily review of previous learned content. The games are rotated on a weekly basis which allows students have new ways to review old concepts. Thank you again for your generous donations!”

  • Leap for LeapPads!

    Funded Feb 15, 2017

There are not words to express my gratitude for your generosity. Your gift will enhance my students' learning and create memorable experiences in the classroom for my current students as well as many more classes to come. The leap pads and games you provided will reinforce the topics and skills we have learned in the classroom. The students thoroughly enjoy racing to solve addition and subtraction facts so they can race their classmates with "awesome" hot wheels cars. These leap pads have the capability to sync up with each other in the classroom through the school's wifi. The girls are enjoying learning about measurement through a cooking game. These games provide opportunities for students to reinforce their learning while making it fun! Thank you again for making this happen for my students!”

  • Books, Books, Books!

    Funded Oct 25, 2016

These books allowed me to further my students love of reading. I introduced familiar characters with these books, introduced text features, and parts of a story. My students were very excited to receive these books. They asked when these books would be available to pick out and place in their book bins to read. Reading in my classroom takes place throughout the day in all subject areas. The students come in the classroom and start reading from their book bin (this is a bin that has books on their level that they choose to read for the week). During guided reading and literacy centers students read: independently, with a buddy, and with the teacher. When we return from related arts, the class participates in shared reading where we study a text on their level. After lunch, we have two independent reading blocks where students practice using the reading skills we discussed during the shared reading lesson. Both the boys and the girls are enjoying the books since I was able to purchase books with characters like: Paw Patrol, Ninja Turtles, Tiny the Dog, Princess, Pinkalicious, and Kitten books. These books lured them into reading!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Reeves

My first grade students lack self-confidence as they are learning to read. Reading books with familiar characters that are on their reading level can be very beneficial, and the children's motivation to read is greatly impacted. Having familiar and favorite characters can give the students a new purpose to read. A variety of books on their reading level to choose from will give the students an opportunity to select their favorite book, and it will increase the likelihood that the students will stay engaged in their reading. These books will not only give the students opportunities to read, but it will help them become fluent, expressive, and successful readers.
