  • Build a Classroom Library!

    Funded Feb 10, 2020

I can’t thank you enough for your generosity. My students jumped for joy when they heard we were getting the library of our dreams! Thank you so much for helping me continue to foster a love of reading in my classroom. I can’t wait for my students to read their new books.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Trinidad

  • Gift a Book!

    Funded Dec 7, 2017

Thank you so much for your donation! The purpose of this project was to gift all my students a book that is on their reading level and on a topic of their interest. Since the books vary by level and topic, there are many skills and lessons being introduce by the new texts. Some of my students are learning about dinosaurs, while others are using their books to practice phonics. Some students are learning how to read graphic novels, while other students are learning all about spiders.

As an educator, my goal is to help my students develop a love of learning. It brings me great joy to see how excited my students are to read their new books during independent reading time!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Trinidad

  • Mindfulness in the Bronx

    Funded Nov 15, 2017

The yoga mats have been a great addition to our Yoga Club. When the students first saw the materials, they couldn't contain their excitement! The most exciting part of having the yoga mats is the images of the yoga poses. Students are able to refer to the mat when choosing a new yoga pose to practice.

The students that are part of the Yoga Club have shared how helpful it has been to learn yoga and mindfulness. Some students have expressed that Yoga Club has helped them learn how to relax and calm down, both at school and at home. Some students continue to practice what they learn in Yoga Club at home, and have even shared some of the poses and mindfulness techniques with their family!

The next steps for Yoga Club is to continue spreading the word and to get more students interested in attending during their lunch period.

Thank you again for your generous donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Trinidad

  • Learning English Through Play!

    Funded Aug 30, 2017

My students and I are using the resources during guided literacy. In their guided literacy centers, students have been using games like "Sight Word Bingo" to build their vocabulary. By learning sight words, students' reading and writing has improved significantly since September. Additionally, students have been using the game "Storyteller Writing Box" to learn about nouns and verbs and to develop short stories focusing on the story elements of characters, setting, and plot. In their "My First Draw and Write Journal" students have been responding to writing prompts and drawing pictures to go along with their response for homework. Overall, the materials have made my students better readers and writers in the last 2 months.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Trinidad

The use of board games and computer software will make the act of learning English and developing literacy skills--which can often be overwhelming for English Language Learners-- fun and interactive, instead. My students will use these materials during our daily guided literacy centers. Games like "Sight Word Bingo" provide students an opportunity to practice the language skills they are learning in class while also engaging with their peers. Activities like "Storyteller Writing Box" gives students an opportunity to use language creatively as they share original stories. The journals will allow students to continue practicing their writing skills while at home, and even serve as a way for students to share the language they are learning with their parents and siblings. The materials I have listed address early literacy skills, such as phonic awareness, sight words, and tier 1 vocabulary. Since I work in a third grade context, materials that address early literacy skills are not easily accessible for teachers and students. As an educator, I strongly believe that learning should be fun and engaging for students. These materials will allow my students to develop the early literacy skills they need while easing the frustration that can sometimes come with learning a new language. Beginning to speak, read, write, and understand the English language is vital for my students' academic success and personal growth. Learning English and developing literacy skills will help students begin to culturally adjust and alleviate the social and emotional challenges of moving to a new country. My students can also use their new acquired English skills at home with their families, to translate and/or help their families culturally adjust as well. This project will ensure my students' success as learners in the classroom and as citizens of New York City's melting pot.
