Beginning With the Basics
Funded Aug 15, 2024Thank you for your support and generosity in funding this project. As a result, we were able to provide pencils for students as well as provide basic supplies like Clorox wipes and tissue boxes for teachers to have in their classrooms at the start of the year.
These fundamental supplies help create welcoming classroom spaces for all students and let them know that they will be well-taken care of in school. They also alleviate stress and financial burden for teachers so that they no longer have to worry about ordering these supplies with their own money.
I am so grateful for your help and for your donations that made this project possible.
Thank you.”

Funded May 10, 2024Thanks to your generosity, we have started off our school year with assignment notebooks provided for all of our 6th grade students. With our school having these materials for our students, we help our students' families reduce costs on school supplies and make the start of the year easier with one less item on their supply list.
The students are excited about these agenda books, and we have already been using them in all their class, daily writing down any homework, upcoming events, or reminders. Organization is a difficult skill for 6th graders, and the practice of using these assignment notebooks helps us teach them how to stay organized and on top of their work. it also helps us communicate to parents and guardians, as they can see in students' notebooks what their homework is for that day.
Having these brand new assignment notebooks for all of our 6th grade students has helped us start the year on a positive note, and it is all thanks to you. Thank you for your kindness and support!”

Funded Dec 4, 2023Thank you again for your donations and support in providing pencils to our students. This is an essential classroom materials that students need daily, and it is so helpful to have a full supply available for those who can not afford school supplies or who sometimes lose their pencils! It seems like a small thing, but it has made a big difference in my classroom this year, so thank you! I appreciate it.
The students appreciate them, too, and I have included some photos of them using the pencils and of some thank you notes they wrote (using these pencils!). Thank you so much!”

Funded Aug 14, 2023Thank you for supporting my Donors Choose project and helping me obtain pencils for our middle school students. Due to your donations, our 6th grade team of teachers were all able to provide students with pencils at the start of this year, which was so helpful because pencils are one of the most needed supplies in school. Often, as teachers, we purchase our own supplies but the costs can add up, so donations like this help greatly.
Thank you for supporting teachers and students, and helping us ensure that all students have the school supplies they need in order to learn. We appreciate it more than we can say.”

Funded Aug 16, 2023Thank you so much for your donations that provided my school with Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, and tissue boxes at the start of this school year. Having these supplies at the start of this year allowed all the 6th grade teachers to have cleaning supplies and maintain a safe, healthy environment for all our students. The students appreciated having these cleaning supplies, too--and the tissues came in very useful as cold season started!
As a teacher, I try my best to create the best possible classroom space for students, and your donations helped me be able to do that this year, and I am so grateful for your generosity.
Thank you, and take care!”

Funded Sep 18, 2023Thank you again for your generous donation to provide books for my students. The 6th graders were very excited when they saw all the new graphic novels in the classroom library--and some of the 7th graders were jealous they didn't have them in class last year (but they were also excited that they could still borrow the books!).
These graphic novels help our students find books they love--and in turn, help them fall in love with reading and find joy in it, which is so important to me as an ELA teacher. Already, students have been borrowing the books and reading them within days--and then sharing and discussing them with their friends.
These novels have also provided us with more diverse stories, like the LGBTQ+ characters in Heartstopper, like Miles Morales, the Black, Puerto Rican superhero in the Spider-Man graphic novel, and like Kamala Khan, the protagonist in Ms. Marvel, who is a Muslim girl dealing with new powers as well as the stress of being a teenager.
In a world where every day, it feels like marginalized groups are more at risk of discrimination or harm, and where more and more people are trying to keep certain books out of kids' hands, I am SO happy to be able to have my students read these books that tell diverse stories and that reflect people like them, so they can see people like them being the heroes of the story and falling in love--and just struggling with school and growing up, too.
I am excited to use these graphic novels for book club groups in my class later this year, and I am so grateful to people like you for making this possible for us.
Thank you and with love,”

Funded Oct 9, 2017My students and I were so excited when our new books came in, and the room was full of excitement when I let them help me open all the packages and look at our new collection of books. Already, students have asked to borrow the new graphic novels and new series to pursue their interests, whether it's fantasy and fairy tales or historical and realistic fiction. Students are now continuing to develop their reading skills and their love of learning outside the classroom, which is wonderful to see, and it's happening thanks to your generosity and support.
Besides allowing students to bring these books home to borrow, our library now provides them with more options every Wednesday during advisory when we have DEAR Day (Drop Everything and Read) across the whole school. My advisory students are especially happy to now have more choices when they pick a new book for DEAR Day, and the books have led to discussions with their peers about what they're reading--they recommend books to each other and ask questions about what happens in these stories. In my ELA classes, I also give Book Talks to introduce books that might interest students, and now I have a wider variety to share with them so I can reach more of my students and find the right book for them.
As a teacher, I am so appreciative that I now have more ways to help my students become lifelong readers, and it makes me happy to look out into my classroom and see that when there's a free moment, one of my students will carefully pull out a book and open it up to reenter its magical world. Seeing the smile on their faces when they flip to the next page is one of the best parts of my day. Thank you for making moments like that possible for them and for me.”

Ms. Sheppard
