Children can simply not learn if their social emotional needs are not met. It is my most important job to provide my students with the tools they need to manage stress, discover and utilize coping strategies, and find calm. According to research, teachers can mitigate the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences by implementing social-emotional learning instruction (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning [CASEL], 2020; Sciaraffa, Zeanah, & Zeanah, 2018). Breathe for Change is a wellness training program for educators. This intensive program will certify me to facilitate and lead wellness, mindfulness and social-emotional learning programs at my school and in my district for students and educators. I am part of our district wellness and SEL team, and we feel strongly we need to be supporting educators through this time so that they can have the resources they need to be the strength needed for their students and to embody the practices we are teaching to the students. Educator well-being creates student success. The Breathe For Change training will enable me to share these resources with my students and my community. This project will help cover the cost of the program which will help me build on what I know about SEL practices and mindfulness. Studies show that daily mindfulness practices have been tied to increased student attendance rates, decreased suspension rate, and reductions in stress and anxiety. Wellness practices have been shown to increase student confidence and performance, especially for those who have experienced trauma.
