The other day as I watched my students work on their writing assignments, I noticed that Jake was having a very hard time using his laptop. He wanted to drop and drag something to somewhere else in his text and the technology was failing him miserably. As much as he tried, his little fingers could not get the mouse pad on the lap to work. He tried on numerous occasions and finally, his little hand went up and I went to assist. Ms. P do you have a mouse I could use. My reply, “no we don’t have any.” The look of disappointment was enough to make me sad. What could I do to address this situation and help him, other students, to be successful? This year I would like my class to each have their own individual mouse and mouse pads. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but if you can’t drag your answer to the correct spot, then how are you going to get great grades. The mouse and mouse pads would be assigned to individual students so that they won’t have that look of frustration when the technology isn’t doing what it is supposed to do. The use of the mouse pad will eliminate all the gunk that would keep them from functioning properly. This year I would like to keep the frustration down and get the grades up using the laptops with a mouse.
