  • Movement Encourages Learning!

    Funded Sep 28, 2022

Thank you again for your generous support of my kindergarteners. While sharing and taking turns are important social emotional skills we are practicing in class, it can be hard to wait for one's own turn. When materials such as flexible seating are limited, it can take a while for everyone to be able to have a turn and that can be trying for young learners.

The Kinders were so excited to walk into the room and to see four more wobble seats! This has made our rotating of seats much easier and people get to have more opportunities to wiggle as they work.

The floor cushions are also amazing! In addition to being bright and livening up the classroom appearance, they are so comfortable and provide students with a clear idea of where their space is when they are working around the room. Students are able to use them as seats, as cushions to sit or as cushions for their elbows as they find comfortable positions to read, write and work throughout the day.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Harrison

  • Inspiring Creativity

    Funded Aug 14, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donations to our classroom! School has just started, and we read our first story this week. We read, I'm NOT Just a Scribble. This story was a great one to start kindergarten with as it shows the flexibility of art and started some wonderful conversations about feelings.

As we read the story, we noticed how the characters interacted and how those interactions impacted the feelings of the main character. We talked about how we could tell what the character was feeling, just by looking at his eyes, eyebrows and mouth. This is very important in kindergarten, as students are learning how to notice and respond to the feelings of others.

The students were so excited to be asked to scribble! We often talk about doing our neatest work, so this was a welcome respite! They used their creativity as they developed their facial features and worked on expressing several different feelings. They then picked one scribble and developed a picture to show why their scribble was experiencing those feelings!”

    With gratitude,

  • Creating Excited Readers and Writers!

    Funded Mar 25, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous support of all of our kindergarteners! The supplies have arrived and the students are eager to use them. When they see another group working with them, students come to find out when it will be their turn!

On the surface, magnetic letters might not seem like a very important tool, but their versatility is wonderful! It is often necessary to have a variety of materials to meet students' varying academic needs. These letters are useful for instruction at many different levels, and as students' skills and knowledge increase, I use them to increase the rigor of the work. Using the same tool to differentiate among student levels is also great for class morale. I am able to design my lessons for each student's needs using the same tools, so students are not aware of the varying levels of instruction.

I have students using the letters to work at several levels right now. Some students are reviewing letter names and sounds, as well as the order of the alphabet. Some students are using the letters to practice identifying vowel sounds and to create predictable words such as "can," "pet," and "bug." Other students are using a combination of the letters and whiteboards to practice reading and spelling sight words. Still others are using the letters to notice the impact of the "silent e," and working to use that "e" in their own writing.

Thank you again for your support! Our teaching team is excited about the lessons we've learned about using these tools and the kids are working really hard and enjoying themselves while they do it. They are thinking, moving and learning and loving it!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Harrison

  • Wobbling for Success

    Funded Jul 21, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous donations! The wobble seats arrived a few days before school began and were in my classroom when I got to have my individual family meetings. When families entered the room, they saw crates, mats and seat cushions, in addition to the new wobble seats. The visual effect of all these options is very inviting and is a great conversation starter when visitors arrive.

During the family meetings, I get to meet with one family at a time. This allows the students to meet me in a peaceful setting, having my undivided attention. They are able to explore the room at their own pace. The students were definitely excited to see the variety of seats in my room. They tried all of the options and seemed surprised when I said they really could sit on the wobble seats. However, the parent reactions were equally as great. Many of them tried the seats and were very interested in the options that are available for their students.

The reaction of students, parents and my co-workers has prompted me to continue to explore alternative seating options. I recently wrote a grant proposal for our whole grade level, so that each class may have a set of wobble seats, as well as adding seat cushions, stability balls with legs and rocking cubby seats. The movement that students are able to do while working, has been very successful and students are working well. I am excited to see how additional choices add to the safe and inviting environment in my class.

Thank you so much! The kids and I are very grateful!

  • Kindergarten Explorers!

    Funded Jan 15, 2017

Thank you so much for your generous support! The kindergarteners are just beginning a science unit on constructions. We use a variety of household items to build with, such as toothpicks and marshmallows. It is great to have these sturdy and reusable items available for this class and for future classes.

The students enjoy examining the colorful and varied bridge and building pictures and then choosing materials to try to build similar structures. This concrete connection between viewing the pictures and then building is an essential step for kindergarteners. At this stage of children's development, they learn by doing first and then they work to develop abstract concepts.

In addition to providing great materials for the students to use for building, you have also provided them with an engaging and hands-on challenge that will allow them to try building and then to discuss their successes and/or struggles. Students can then change their plans based on their experiences and try again. Developing a "can do" attitude will be a great asset as they move through their school careers”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Harrison

As educators, we begin preparing students for college and career as soon as the enter school. In kindergarten, my goal is create life-long lovers of learning, who embrace challenges. Teaching children to persevere through trial and error is a tremendous skill. Students are engaged when presented with problems and asked to find solutions. Mistakes are proof you are trying, is a saying that I have seen recently and that I think helps my students move from worrying about being right to being risk takers. A focus in our curriculum is construction. Students explore to determine the sturdiest ways to build bridges and structures. These materials will provide students with many ways to try, evaluate, adjust and try again. The use of the STEM journals will allow students to connect language and science, as they record their planning, results and any changes they make.
