My project will fund books (Yes! Actual books!) from the "You Wouldn't Want to Be/Live Without....!" and "Cat in the Hat Learning Library" series. My project will use books as a remediation tool, teaching resource, and for direct student reading experiences during classroom, independent reading, and therapy times. The books chosen will fill in gaps or supplement classroom lessons. By having books on hand that are science and social studies-based, high interest, visually stimulating, and have the extraneous language removed from them, students will be able to learn and retain academic concepts and vocabulary. The reading levels are 2nd-5th grade, but are filled with academic, non-fiction, science and humanities concepts. Literacy is at the core of all subjects and nothing beats a good book! For example, “If I Ran the Rainforest” has content words such as “mangrove,” “transpiration” and “ecosystem.” “Oh, Say Can You Say, What’s the Weather Today" explains condensation, evaporation, types of clouds, and contains vocabulary such as forecast, humid, meteorologist, and magnify. The “You Wouldn’t Want to Be a” and “You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without” series set the stage for learning about specific historical periods and specific science concepts. It combines higher-level thinking and perspective-taking with fact-based content. Examples include: “You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Medieval Knight/Egyptian Mummy/Statue of Liberty Worker” and “You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Gravity/Clean Water/Sleep/Money/Clocks/Calendars, etc.”
