  • Reading in Economics

    Funded Jun 3, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom! These texts will further my students study of Economics and global trade systems this year. Our state has adopted new curriculum standards and challenged educators to develop new courses that focus on Economics and Personal Financial Literacy standards without giving a lot of support for resources to make these course a reality.

In my classroom, we will read these texts throughout the course of the nine weeks. Chapter assignments are made each week and students are assessed on their reading of the texts. However, we are also able to have rich conversations about what we are reading and how the door to the world is at our fingertips through our endeavors.

My students are enjoying the opportunity to learn more about the world around them. They live in a small (former) textile town that has been greatly impacted by trade policies that have been enacted in recent years. It is important to have an understanding of those policies if we are going to focus on helping our community recover and grow.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Church

  • Maker Space

    Funded Aug 1, 2019

My students will so excited to see our new classroom maker space. We start back to school next week. Some students from last year have already stopped by and they were very excited to see me putting together my new bookshelves to start organizing our new classroom maker space.

We have used school wide materials and spaces to be work on projects in the past, but it will be amazing to have our own space and materials.

This year we will use this new maker space while working on numerous assignments that will support student leaning and retention of material.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Church

  • Academic Skills are the Key to Success!

    Funded Dec 30, 2016

I would like to thank you so much for the support of my classroom project. The materials you helped purchase are helping my students become better writers. We have used these materials to help us identify specific parts of essays we needed to be sure to include, and they have also helped us identify weaknesses in our writing.

My students were thrilled when they say the new materials that were provided by the project. Anything that makes the high school classroom more colorful and allows students to complete and assignment in a visual way helps increase their chances for success.

In the future, I hope to continue to use these materials in my classroom to support writing instruction. High school students are now asked to write on nearly all forms of standardized testing. I believe that this writing instruction will allow my students to be more successful on state and national assessments where writing is required.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Church

In my social studies classroom, we work not only to master the content outlined in the Essential Standards, but also to gain the academic skills necessary to be successful in all classes and in higher education. In the past, I have noticed that students are more likely to master skills when they have a way to organize their thoughts about the skill and a specific routine to follow when completing a task. Some of the more difficult academic skills for my students to master have always been the writing skills they need to be successful in a secondary education setting. Words like thesis and phrases like transition sentences are often foreign to them. They recognize good writing when they see it, but they do not know how to produce it themselves. After attending a recent workshop on teaching Advanced Placement students and teaching Writing skills, I am excited to try strategies recommended by the presenters using highlighters to focus help students visually represent the different writing components that are necessary to answer constructed response or essay questions.
