Children learn best by doing and through hands-on activities! Daily math talks are a part of our daily math lessons. I will do daily math talks with the rekenreks where I invite children to tell us "What their brain is thinking." They are amazing me with the different strategies they come up with on how their brains are solving problems. In first grade, we will be working on breaking apart numbers up to 20 with a focus on numbers of 10. Rekenreks also work great for teaching the first grade standard of doubles plus one and doubles minus one. Currently, I have do not have my own rekenreks. It makes it difficult when I need to borrow rekenreks from other classrooms. When this happens, I am taking away the rekenreks from the other first graders who are then not able to use them at the same time. These tools will allow us to do more math, QUICKLY! We have a lot of learning to do each day, so this will help us spend some quick minutes each day on math concepts that are key to helping children build their math foundation for their future
