My school is a high-poverty urban charter school in Massachusetts for roughly 300 students in grades 7 through 12. I teach 7th grade math and advise 8th grade students. Our goal is to prepare 100% of our students both to get into good colleges and to graduate from these colleges with distinction. Our school is only in its 6th year, but already we are making solid progress. Our test scores are among the highest in the state, and our first two graduating classes of alumni are currently attending top colleges across the nation. Part of the way we have achieved success is through strict academic and behavioral rigor. Students must adhere to a rigid dress code. If they do not finish their homework or misbehave in class, they are required to stay after school for detention.
