If my project is funded, my students will have access to various books, games, flashcards, and activities to help them get a better understanding of American Sign Language. They will be able to learn about the history of American Sign Language and learn about various aspects of Deaf culture. By learning about another culture, the students will gain awareness about what it is like to be a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person and the struggles they face every day and have learned to overcome. Although American Sign Language will be the focus of our class, the students will also be learning how to be more comfortable expressing themselves without using spoken word. In class, the students will be introduced to various methods to communicate, such as acting out, playing games, facial expressions and practicing their new skills in class. Learning American Sign Language will help the students with their self confidence and make them more comfortable expressing themselves in a non traditional manner. Not only will this be beneficial for the high school students in my ASL class, but this will also benefit the deaf and hard of hearing students who I work with one on one throughout the district.
