  • Supplies for Success

    Funded Sep 18, 2019

My students have been hard at work this school year! From making models on whiteboards to cutting out pieces for a project, the students have been making good use of the supplies that you donated. The students were so excited to have a wides selection of colors to use on their models, as in the past they have been restricted to red, blue, and black. Now they are able to use the various colors to create more detailed models. The students have also been enjoying the regular markers and have made some really great posters using them.

The basic tools that you donated have made a world of different in my classroom. Everyone is using the electric pencil sharpener, and we are all happy that they old manual one is no longer "eating" up pencils. The left-handed students in my class were so excited to finally have scissors that they can comfortably use, and I hope to buy some more pairs so I have enough for everyone. The folder holders help to keep us organized, which leads to more learning!

I can't tell you what a difference it has made to have these supplies to use this school year. Thanks to you, we are off to a successful start!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Leone

  • Shooting for a 5

    Funded Sep 18, 2019

My students have been hard at work preparing for the AP biology exam. The students are using their new study books to help them prepare for unit tests with the larger goal of preparing for the AP exam in May. The students enjoy using the books to check their understanding of the various topics covered in class such as cellular energetics, cell communication, and the cell cycle. Once the students assess their knowledge, they can target areas in need of improvement and focus their energy on those topics. This has been instrumental in improving scores on unit tests. The students also have found the practice free response questions to be especially helpful in honing their skill at answering them. I am confident these books will help the students to perform on par or better than their peers across Connecticut, the country and the world. I can't tell you enough how much it means to have your support.”

  • 21st Century Skills

    Funded Mar 7, 2017

Thank you so much for the generous donations that you made to help support my project. Thanks to you, my students have been able to use new laptop computers on a daily basis in my classroom. The students have benefited from access to online resources such as Advanced Placement practice tests, tutorials and activities that accompany our textbook, and various websites that the students use for research in my class. My students are able to check their academic grades using the school's online portal, and this has made a huge difference for them in their ability to monitor their progress in my class. Most recently, the students carried out a virtual experiment testing the effects of antimicrobial substances on bacterial growth. Without the technology, they would have not been able to experience this lab, or collect their own data to analyze. These laptops have allowed me to provide an authentic scientific experience for my students. I look forward to the new and exciting opportunities that these laptops will bring to my students for years to come. Thank you again for your generosity and for believing in public education.”

    With gratitude,

I am requesting laptops that will be used in my classroom for a variety of purposes. In my school, there is a set of aging laptops that is shared between the members of the science department. However, they are often not functioning properly. I would like to replace these laptops with new ones so that my students will be able to effectively use technology in the science classroom. One focus over the next several years will be the implementation of the newly adopted Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) which put an emphasis on technological skills. The NGSS framework incorporates modeling as a strategy for students to map out their thinking and understanding. New laptops would allow them greater access to simulations and other tools to help with their modeling. Students in my AP biology course rely heavily on computers for access to the internet where there are a variety of tools to support their learning and test preparation. Our textbook has a companion website with online activities and assessments that are instrumental in their learning. Additionally, my students are enrolled in AP Insight, which provides online resources and formative assessments for the students. Access to this program is critical for students to identify topics of concern and find ways to improve their understanding of the challenge areas. There is a demand for increased use of technology in the 21st century classroom, and my classroom is ill-equipped to provide my students with the necessary skills to be successful beyond high school. The donations for my classroom will help to bridge the technology gap that many of my students face. Having increased exposure to technology in the classroom will better prepare my students to enter a world where technology is omnipresent.
