I am the MESA Advisor for our school. MESA stands for Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement. I work directly with 5th and 6th grade students to promote interests in these career fields. We do hands-on activities, invite key speakers, and participate in field trips that are related to the activities. This particular activity will challenge students to explore truss design, load capacity, construction, and give them the opportunity to create their own bridge. We will begin with an activity that explores different truss designs. Students will then test different truss designs on a computer program. At this point students will work in teams to develop their bridge based on the truss design that they have chosen. Once my students have finished their bridge, we will test the bridges for weight capacity. I believe that these kits will allow my students to extend their learning by building specific bridges. I can also challenge my students that are quick finishers to experiment with the various bridge designs.
