Everything in the current world is run off of technology. Scientists operate a telescope that can see billions of miles away. They can play the world's coolest video game as they drive their remote control car around Mars! So many retailers have moved to tablets as their register. Even the McDonald's has touch screens now to order your food.
Technology is everywhere, and getting the technology into the kids' hands as early and often as possible will help them be more successful when they enter the real world. There are apps to practice math facts, or allow them to explore the solar system without ever leaving their desk. They can research and type reports all from the power of a tablet. If you want your kids to make a short movie demonstrating their ability to divide fractions, there's iMovie. If you want them to take pictures to document a project, there's the camera. They can edit the pictures, add captions, overlay text. They can create and share slide shows. There are apps that allow them to create art projects, or practice musical notes, or play instruments. There are even apps that will allow them to time and read a passage, recording as they go, allowing them to playback and hear their fluency, and learn from their mistakes. The possibilities are truly endless.
Through mirroring capabilities, you can allow them to show a presentation to the entire class. If several iPads are in use, but one group is doing something especially successful, with just a push of a button, they can take over the projector or TV allowing you to display their successes to the world. The powers are endless, and will only continue to grow. More technology is necessary within my, and every classroom!
