Students arrive to school with a variety of challenges everyday. In a typical class of thirty to thirty-four students, one child arrived where the hardest decision they made that morning was whether or not to have Frosted Flakes or Captain Crunch for breakfast and the student two seats over had to decide whether to come to school at all because he or she has no clean clothing, and another who wants to come to school has to move about so quietly so as to not wake his uncle who is also sharing the living room sofa where they sleep, while yet another carries a Louis Vuitton handbag as her personal book bag that contains as little school material as possible. Although each scenario described has actually occurred, not one of these scenarios defines the ability of any of those children to decipher, interpret or decode mathematics. Mathematics is a language that can describe and shape the world. The opportunity to shape this world will be given to those who are literate in quantitative methods. The foundation of these methods can be found in sound mathematics. Excellence in mathematics can be achieved not just by ‘natural aptitude’, but excellence is formed by influencing their habits. By supporting this project, you will provide each child with the items listed in this project: a binder, a folder for in-class use, a folder for differentiated materials and a composition notebook that contains graph paper. These materials will help each child to begin strong regardless of the differences in their individual circumstances. By providing each class with identical materials, this helps to prevent a lot of the background struggles that vary amongst the children from influencing their academic performance in the classroom. The graph composition notebook is used as an interactive notebook.
