My class is moving from a traditional seating arrangement at desks and chairs to a flexible seating model. We will be getting rid of our individual desks and instead having various options for students to learn in ways that are more productive for themselves. We are learning to become more self-directed learners through incorporating various seating options in the classroom. Students are encouraged to think about what they need in order to help themselves focus and be more engaged in learning. These stools will help provide another option for students who need movement in order to focus and be fully engaged. As we look at the unique needs of students today, traditional education has to make some changes. What has worked in the past does not necessarily always work for these students. Seating is one way in which I will try to meet the needs of my students, provide them opportunities to learn from each other, help develop their own self-direction and self- monitoring, and provide choice in their daily lives. The students are excited to have the opportunity to try these stools!
