My students are young, vibrant and curious individuals with questions and anecdotes galore. However, as we transitioned into our various Zoom classes after advisory, they became a lot more subdued. They stare blankly at the screen and I'll occasionally hear their muffled reading voices every now and then and not much more than that. It's difficult to check-in on their progress while I myself am teaching my students on my own zoom. I recognized now the social emotional importance of their physically being in school and I aim to maximize that in the short advisory time we have together. Please help my students to zoom into gardening to revive the overgrown school garden for some hands-on, mind-on experiences. We need various supplies to be able to engage in this project for some learning outdoors. We will use the supplies to clean the area and prepare it for a bountiful garden in the fall. This project allows my students to work cooperatively while still physically distanced. It affords them the opportunity to step away from the computer screen and engage in their surroundings in a meaningful way. In a time where these students have experienced a lot of loss (whether of loved ones, experiences, learning, control, etc) I want to create a space for them to soak in some Vitamin D, rest their eyes from screen-time and experience the many mental, social and emotional benefits of gardening.
