The use of calculators is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in 8th grade Math and Algebra 1. Using the project based learning model in math the students are very independent and tend to try many things on their own in order to take ownership of their learning. Many of my students have struggled with math for a long time and have a low self-efficacy when it comes to computations. The calculators help them by-pass the the computation struggles and allow them to focus on the concepts and tying together the information. What becomes a problem is when students are struggling with their calculators because they have never used them before up until this point. They may type something incorrectly, they are not sure what button to press, they can be confused by certain functions, or they simply want me to check every step as they go. It becomes distracting to the class when multiple students need help but there is only one of me to check their calculators. The Navigator system will help by pass that problem by allowing me to check multiple calculators at one time and allows students to submit answers through the calculator for self-check. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and I will be able to catch mistakes faster and more efficiently. Plus in this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their literacy as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology!
