Every educator understands the importance of providing children with direct experiences with materials, objects, and phenomena to encourage personal understanding of a lesson. Nowhere is this more apparent—and crucial—than in science lessons. While scientific information can be remembered when taught through books and lectures, when children study the same concepts through hands-on learning, they build a functional understanding and develop the ability to become independent learners. Through hands-on learning, students are forced to think by requiring interpretation of the observed events, rather than memorization of correct responses; they are encouraged to question observed events and the resulting data; and they practice cause-and-effect thinking. The kit I am requesting contains a variety of earth science tools, such as a wave demonstrator, rock and mineral set, and other scientific tools that allow students to do more than just read a chapter and answer questions to demonstrate their understanding. Previous lessons in my class have included labs in stations, where students have demonstrated reading, writing, and technological skills related to various areas of content, but my vision for the use of this kit is to create a station lab where every station is a hands-on experiment, and a great way to review and reinforce concepts learned throughout the year.
