  • Cold-Season Essentials

    Funded Feb 20, 2020

Thanks to you, my students will be comfortable throughout the remainder of this winter and likely through the next! I am thrilled that students know my classroom will be able to provide everything they need to get through these cold, dry months. Every time a student reaches for a tissue or a cough drop, I will remember your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Finman

  • Engaging Books for Independent Choice Reading

    Funded Dec 24, 2019

What a gift to start the new year with new reading selections for my students! Many of my students have already caught on to the joy and benefits of reading, and now your generosity will allow them to continue this habit while others learn to develop it for the first time.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Finman

  • School Supplies for a Strong Start

    Funded Jun 13, 2019

Where to begin? Your generosity's impact is boundless. I love being able to offer materials to my students without having to think about how much it cost me.

In the first week of school, I was able to swiftly help out students who weren't able to attain binders and/or composition notebooks. Any feelings of embarrassment for not bringing supplies were quickly squashed and we were able to move on with learning.

We have a group project coming up, and I didn't even have to worry about having enough posterboard, markers, etc. to fuel student creativity. Usually, I'm running to the store at the last minute to supply the bare minimum.

None of this is to mention the plethora of post-its, white-out, writing utensils, and so much more that you've provided us with. You are our hero!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Finman

  • Stronger Readers Make Strong Writers

    Funded Jun 13, 2019

Phew, what an incredible start to the school year! Every student in my 12th-grade literature course chose a book from our classroom library on the first day of school as part of our "Book of the Month" project. I get to have weekly, one-on-one conversations with each student about a book they were excited to choose. Not possible without your contribution.

Their selections were so high-interest that many of my juniors have been compelled to check out books for independent reading as well. They wait after class to ask me for a pass to come browse through books during their study halls. This has never happened in my room before.

Every one of my graphic novels is already checked out, and some students (of all reading levels) have been bringing in their own graphic novels from home to share with me. It's as though they didn't realize the genre had value until they saw teachers offering it.

Less than two weeks into the new year, your generosity has already so profoundly impacted our classroom culture. Thank you from my happiest teacher heart.”

    With gratitude,

  • Classroom Tech To Display Modeling

    Funded Feb 14, 2019

Thank you for bringing this new technology to our classroom! Having an iPad and Apple Pencil available to us has introduced possibilities beyond what we anticipated when we first created this project.

While teaching, whatever I'm annotating on the iPad can be projected on the whiteboard so that students can visualize, for example, a text analysis. We have also assigned class notetakers who are in charge of taking digital notes for a given lesson, which can then be posted onto Google Classroom as a PDF for students to reference.

There is also an abundance of apps that we are discovering, such as Randomly, which selects students at random during class discussions, allowing for equitable participation. We have also discovered that the Calm app subscription is free for educators, so when we have 3-5 spare minutes we can end the class period on a mindful note.”

    With gratitude,

  • Chromebooks for Effective Writing Instruction

    Funded Jun 21, 2018

The addition of these Chromebooks to our classroom has been life-changing for my students!

Take the seniors, for example: at our school, each senior must apply to at least five colleges, which makes for a lot of online college research as well as a considerable number of application essays. The fact that this year's seniors get to accomplish all of that on efficient, portable devices has made all the difference compared to previous years. Groups can easily form for writers' workshops on essay drafts. I have created an instructor conference space to which students can bring their Chromebooks when they need help on any number of application matters. If students have a question for a guidance counselor, they can simply bring their Chromebook with them down the hall. None of this is to mention the amount of paper that has been saved, now that it's easier than ever for students to complete their assessments digitally.

You have truly made such a difference in my seniors' productivity during this crucial year.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Finman

  • A Room of Their Own

    Funded Oct 17, 2016

Your contributions turned what was essentially a storage closet into a comfortable space for students to read and collaborate. I got the call that our materials had arrived during Senior Seminar, and some of the students in that class showed up during their study hall to help haul and unpack our new chairs, pillows, rug, etc. Every box-opening was greeted with shrieks of "cute!"

The students got to work, right away, installing the library fixtures and furniture, making the room their own. They then decided that the bulletin board needed to be covered with inspirational quotes and have been slowly adding to their collection. While I initially thought that the room would be used mainly for small-group collaboration during class, it has also become an inspiring space for these seniors to work and think.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Finman
