Flexible Seating for Students!
Funded Jul 25, 2022In this season of gratitude, on behalf of Room 7, I want to express my sincere thanks for everyone who contributed to the Flexible Seating Project. The flexible seating options have not only been a hit with the students, but they have also improved engagement and participation. In the beginning of the year, we read Julia xxx's "I Have Ants in My Pants" to help the class understand that it's a challenge to sit still sometimes – and then we introduced the flexible seating to show the students their available options when they too have ants in their pants. During group discussion and individual work, the wobble stools and cushions are there to give them a new way to sit and be moving but still engaged in the class. Fewer students leave to take walks when they feel frustrated, and students are less frustrated during group lessons and individual work. Students love reading in the library in the comfy chairs, and the students will gather in groups to pair read or read individually in a cozy spot, making reading a preferred activity. Our small groups in the library have fantastic participation as the students are relaxed and comfortable.
Most of all, the students of Room 7 feel seen and heard, that it's ok to need to move and that there is something special just for them when they need support. Making my students feel seen, heard, supported, and appreciated is the best I can strive for, and your generosity made it happen.
But don't take my word for it...the students of room 7 said it far better than I could!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Mitchell
