  • Earthquakes in the Bronx

    Thank you once again for your donation of Safe-T Compasses to my Earth Science classroom. The triangulation method is a station during the lab practical on the Earth Science Regents and this topic is hard enough for my students to understand. Students need to draw three circles on a map based on seismogram data to find the epicenter of an earthquake.

    With your donation my students were able to master all the necessary skills to find the epicenter of an earthquake in two weeks which is a great accomplishment. Last year, with limited supplies and the old fashioned pencil compasses, it took my students about four weeks to understand the same material.

    Every student in my classroom has their own Safe-T Compass to use during labs instead of having to share. The students have told me that these compasses are very easy to use compare to the old fashioned pencil compasses. I plan on using the Safe-T Compasses again next year with as much success.   • Science - The Way It's Meant To Be Seen

    Thank you once again for your donation of an LCD projector to my Earth Science classroom. This technology is refreshing and allows me to diversity my lessons. The projector actually makes me more excited to teach the content and the students can sense my enthusiasm. Providing my students with more visuals reminds me of how I fell in love with science. Science is not just something that you can talk about or read in a textbook. Science needs to be seen because it can be found everywhere in world and now my students are able to see how science relates to their everyday lives.

    Thus far I have been able to show more movie clips on topics such as earthquakes in California and the hotspot under Yellowstone National Park. Whenever my students see the projector setup they smile and ask, "What are we going to do today?" The students are more engaged throughout the lesson and have been asking more questions. Seeing science in action has gotten them thinking about the relationships between natural processes and helps them to understand the processes behind it. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
