With a substantial American flag to fly at our school, I plan to teach students the importance of the flag and proper flag etiquette (the Flag Code). I will train a group of students how to carry, fold, raise & lower the flag, and salute. I think it will benefit our students to reflect on why the flag is so deserving of respect and to learn what it means to be patriotic. As Calvin Coolidge said, "When we look at our flag and behold it emblazoned with all our rights, we must remember that it is equally a symbol of our duties." I want my students to learn to be respectful, responsible, and productive members of society, who are willing to serve their community and country. Another very important responsibility we have to our country (and world) is to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Our school does a good job of recycling cardboard (thanks mostly to David, our custodian), but we teachers seem to be too busy to make sure the paper is being recycled. That's why I want to teach students to use a wagon to collect paper from every classroom once a week, and then they will transport it to the recycling dumpster near the lower playground.
