Our students often get discouraged or unmotivated when they are using obsolete equipment and materials during our speech and language sessions. We are three Speech-Language Pathologists and we service students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. We currently have access to one desktop computer and one whiteboard. We also use our own personal laptops to engage students in lessons involving technology. What we find the most challenging with our students is engaging them in tasks that are more cognitively demanding such as reading and writing as opposed to speaking and listening. At the moment we are using a tool called “The Story Grammar Marker” to teach students how to communicate narrative stories orally and in writing with clarity and details. This tool allows our students to make the important cognitive-linguistic link between speech and writing. This tool also provides a practical way to help them strengthen and organize their discourse skills. As our students continue to progress in their discourse and writing skills they will benefit from the use of an iPad for various activities for deconstructing narratives and informational expression. An iPad would permit our students to use digital texts as an alternative or addition to print. An iPad would make curriculum-based animations such as Brain pop come to life in a small group setting. Websites such as Google Earth can be used to engage students in comprehending and generating descriptive language about settings. An iPad would give access to tools such as Book Creator, which allows students to create electronic books to tell a personal or removed narrative, or compose informational text. My speech/language students will gain confidence in their communication skills by having the opportunity to produce a story using current technology.
