Each day we communicate in a variety of ways. We communicate using speech as well as facial expressions and gestures. Many of the students on my caseload require alternative means to communicate. The materials requested will allow students to access, engage, learn and communicate within their classroom and throughout their school day. Items, such as the Kit Button Talk set, will allow my students to active pre-stored messages to greet classmates. Because they are small and magnetic, they can easily be placed in designated areas or travel with the students. In addition, gumball switches can be used to access technology and equipment they are unable to currently due to physical impairments. Several of my students enjoy and are highly motivated by music. However, due to motor impairments they are unable to access musical instrucments. The Toy Music Box will not only allow them to play music, but continue to develop cause and effect skills through the use of switches. Another area my students have difficultly with is the social aspect of school. While they may be interested with peers and interacting socially, they lack the understanding and tools to be able to navigate and appropriately engage. The You Are A Social Detective Software will assist in providing direct instruction and practice in the area of social language. Items requested allow students with severe communication and physical impairments to access the curriculum and participate with and along-side peers. By increasing their ability to communicate, my students can better connect with their school community.
