We know that when we empower students with literacy skills, it benefits everyone. Our strategy to promote better outcomes for low-income students with learning disability relies on fostering respect, appreciation of self and community and implementing evidence-based practices. Our student population blooms and thrives when they are exposed to diverse, culturally responsive books that celebrates Black and Latinx culture. The explicit literacy programs in my classroom utilizes culturally relevant resources that honors oral traditions and is storytelling based to enhance reading comprehension in students that are English Language learners, have a learning disability and receive services to support an individualized educational plan (IEP). These books are essential tools for my students to always connect reading the word with reading their world.
