The students in my class will complete many research projects this school year. The first being writing biography on Jesse Owens, the track star from Cleveland, who grew up and went to school not to far from where many of my students live and go to school. Since this is the first project we will complete, we are going to do this together. We will read and discuss the story in a whole group setting, then the students will either work with a partner or in a small group of 3-4 students to find important facts about Jesse Owens. The students will then take the facts they learned and use them to create a PowerPoint Presentation on Jesse Owens. I will model with the students how to create a PowerPoint presentation first, then allow them to "experiment" with the PowerPoint program to create their own projects. The students will then present their completed projects to the class. The students will then be able to pick another biography and complete the same project on their own, repeating the same steps. There are many wheels turning with this project. First the students will be reading age appropriate biographies, while learning about a person who made an impact on our society. They will also be working in small groups to complete with project and learning how to work as a team. They also will be learning how to use technology and sharing the information they learned, as well as being able to listen to others sharing information. We need multiple copies of a range biographies to get a better understanding of people who make an impact in the world. Our titles include Who was Thomas Jefferson?, Who was Rosa Parks? Who was Ben Franklin? and many more.
