  • All Hands on Deck for the Environment!

    Funded Jan 9, 2023

I am thrilled to send this note of gratitude and accompanying pictures to you. The gifts of books, puzzles, pencils, crayons, and aprons have exceeded our expectations in propelling our movement to save the environment to the next level. Not only are our older students readily accessing information about issues related to climate change and the environment, but through these books, we are introducing these ideas to the youngest among us.

Our students are thrilled to share their newly acquired knowledge with their peers, relatives, and other members of our community. Because of your generosity, we are introducing more and more of our community of learners to the dangers of climate change while promoting a love of reading.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ambrose

  • See Science, Say Science, Touch Science, Read Science!

    Funded Nov 12, 2022

This project was born when the students in our Green Teams 1 during a brainstorming session came up with the idea to begin a Sustainability, Science, Lending Library. This entire initiative is student-led and designed to promote a love of literacy from the youngest students in our school community, all the way up to the graduating seniors.

The program has been more successful than we could ever have envisioned. The Early Childhood books are part of every 3-K and Pre K Science lesson. The three and four year old future scientists lay on bean bags and look at the vibrant pictures. A group of students might request that the teacher read one of the books they've selected to them. They ask questions, make connections, and at the end of the session, they put the books back in proper places.

The older students look forward to our Breakfast Reading Program. The student librarians take books to the cafeteria two days each week during breakfast. They encourage their breakfast mates to read together and discuss the issues surrounding climate change. These books are gifts that will keep on giving.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ambrose

  • Sustainability and Literacy, Perfect Together!

    Funded May 10, 2022

The idea of establishing a Sustainability Lending Library was born out of a brainstorming event at one of our Sustainability Student Leadership Academy sessions. In a world where everything is digital, it is heartwarming that our students themselves made a request to have real books as part of our initiative.

Members of the Green Teams love to come to our shared space with our science room and relax on the bean bags while gathering new information about "all things Climate Health." We are in the process of training student librarians to ensure that the entire school has access to these resources. Students will have an opportunity to leave feedback by writing short reviews about the books that they have read.

How do we become better readers, you ask? We read! Thank you for helping us to weaponize books in our fight against climate change.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ambrose

  • Sustainability Gifts That Keep On Giving!

    Funded Jun 9, 2022

Sustainability is alive and well at Brighter Choice Community School. Our Green Teams - 1, 2, and our Sustainability Student Leadership Academy (comprised of graduating seniors), have all demonstrated, by their efforts and passion for our projects, that they are more than capable caretakers of our environment.

We celebrated a year of hard work by holding our first annual Green Team Awards Assembly. The gifts you helped us to purchase were awarded to these deserving environmentalists at the end of the last school year. These gifts will keep on giving beyond the classroom walls as they will serve as discussion pieces and activities that our students were able to take home over the summer break

Thank you for helping us to mold the minds of the change makers and problem solvers now and in the future.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ambrose

  • Spreading Our Passion for the Environment!

    Funded Jun 8, 2022

Our Earth Day in May project was undoubtedly the most anticipated event in our Green Team calendar. Our students and families had the opportunity to demonstrate through their crafts and creativity that we are committed to Sustainability and fighting Climate Change. Students, parents, staff, and administrators all were invited to participate in creating at least one item that was useful or decorative from items that were "landfill bound." We were able to reduce our collective carbon footprints while designing, building, following instructions, and then presenting our projects for the school community. Moreover, we had fun!

The items that you helped us to secure served as prizes for the outstanding projects. In addition, all participants received a participation prize that was somehow connected to the environment.

We can't wait for our next Earth Day in May Museum!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ambrose

  • Sustainability Matters at BC!

    Funded May 9, 2022

Our project, Sustainability Matters at Brighter Choice, was a monumental success thanks to the purchases we made through Donor's Choose. Our school, is passionate about the environment and committed to thinking outside the box to achieve this end. We were able to complete several schoolwide projects this year. The most high-profiled and impactful event was our Earth Day in May Museum.

Our students and families accepted the challenge to find items, particularly items made of plastic and creatively repurpose them so that they would have a longer circulation life outside of landfills. Approximately 2/3 of our students in Grades 3K - Grade 5 accepted the challenge to creatively reuse or repurpose items to prevent them from entering landfills. While some submissions were simple, some students and families were thoughtful and intentional about designing and building toys, clothing items, and truly displayed innovation and outside of the box thinking. Most importantly, conversations about Climate Change and its negative impact on our weather systems, our health, and our economy are happening in households all over our community.

We look forward to partnering with our Donors Choose families to continue to be leaders in the fight against Climate Change - one student, one teacher, one school, one community, one city, at a time.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ambrose
