The generosity I receive from this project will provide my students with non-traditional seating options conducive to the needs of today's learner. Reynolds (Science of Fitness, 2015) says that, "globally speaking, kids sit on average 8.5 hours. Movement and activity really drops after age 8. That's of course when school, homework and tech devices take over kid's lives." Providing students with the opportunity to move throughout the day and choose personal working environments will not only get the blood circulating, but also allow students to develop a sense of personal learning styles and need. Sitting in any chair for more than a short (10-minute) interval is likely to have negative effects on the physical self, hence the mental self, and at a minimum, reduce the awareness of physical and emotional sensations. This creates fatigue which is bad for learning. Students may seem restless and unable to concentrate; or worse, they may become undisciplined, when the real problem is the lack of movement. It is my hope that providing my students with more seating options within the classroom will allow me to better meet personal learning needs within the classroom. The resources granted through donor's generosity will provide my students with flexible seating within my classroom. The stools will be used with a tall circle table. Students will utilize the floor seats around the classroom as they find suitable places to complete their work. The two yoga balls will provide additional movement for students who have difficulty sitting at desks. This project will provide my students the opportunity to work in a space that fits their needs.
