The goal of this project is to provide equipment for my chemistry students to conduct lab experiments, gather data, and analyze data .The LabQuest3 and temperature probes can be used throughout the year by Chemistry students at our school as they study gas laws, thermochemistry, kinetics, and rates of reaction.
In hands-on activities, students will perform scientific investigations and collect data using LabQuest devices and temperature probes. LabQuest devices make data tables and graphs that help students integrate data to support their claims and conclusions after running an experiment. No other software is required. The LabQuest equipment can be used in many chemistry labs, which will give students the chance to build proficiency and mastery in collecting data, analyzing data, and communicating their findings effectively.
Additionally, these kinds of activities could only currently be completed with equipment like an alcohol thermometer; however, the time constraints of our 55 minute classes make this inefficient, imprecise, and lacking in engagement. The LabQuest temperature probes can take up to 2 readings per second which allows for immediate understanding of how the temperature of the reaction is changing. The LabQuest device also graphs the temperature data as it is recorded which allows students to analyze the data in a timely manner. The proposed project will give students the opportunity to apply challenging concepts in a hands-on format that will appeal to multiple learning styles as they collaborate in small groups and then develop their conclusions based on observations and discussion with lab partners. The LabQuest devices can be paired with additional probe ware to use in even more lab activities for chemistry, physical science, and physics.
