The U.S. Constitution via Graphic Novel
Funded Oct 22, 2009Thank you so much for your generous donations which allowed my students to receive The United States Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation. The books arrived just after we completed our study of the Constitution so the students used them near the end of the semester for review prior to the state-mandated end-of-course test. You've never seen such delight on students' faces when reading, discussing and writing about these books!
In addition to what I saw in class I was amazed when I was approached by three different teachers who asked the same question: "What is [this student] reading? I've never seen [the student] so into a book before!" Another commented that when she teased a student (who normally reads lighter fiction) for reading a "real" book the student replied "Well you should see this book!" and proceeded to show her several different passages in the book that she enjoyed.
These books provide students with a rich, interesting and creative way to think about a subject which sometimes, to be honest, gets mired down into the nuts and bolts of the three branches or checks and balances. To see it as lively and in this more relevant format has really made a difference. I look forward to continuing to use these texts with future Civics and Economics students as well.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Jones
