Remote Aensing Through Geo-caching

Funded Dec 7, 2009

This spring my students embarked on a fossil treasure hunt using the GPS unit purchased by the grant given to us this year. The students were pleseantly surprised in the amount of fun this activity created. This has left them screaming for more. We have decided to incorporate another activity following the end of grade testing because of the interest in Geo-caching.

The students were given latitude and longitude coordinates and asked to use their GPS units to find the location given to them. When the student got to the location they had to search for a hidden tube. Inside the tube was a sample fossil and a picture. The students had to record the location and the type of fossil on their data sheet, run back to me to see if they were correct and then they received another location coordinates.

What a wonderful experience they had in identifying their fossil using this wonderful technology. Thank you very much for granting them this opportunity.”

With gratitude,
