Since completing my master's research capstone, I have been working to create a growth mindset environment in our classroom. A growth mindset advocates that brains and talent are just part of the equation to success. Individuals with a growth mindset believe that hard work and grit are just as essential to overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way of their success. Who can teach these life lessons better than the people who lived them? I also hope to expand my students' horizons in terms of reading genres by exposing them to biographies and autobiographies. Working in groups of 6-8 students, students will read these books and meet together on a daily basis to discuss thoughts, reactions, and feelings regarding their books in order to cultivate deeper comprehension of the text. A central theme to all book discussions will be growth mindsets and how students can transfer these lessons to their own lives. Students will also be completing an individual culminating book project surrounding their books.
