Fifth grade uses U.S. History as the guide for a thematic study throughout the school year integrating reading, writing, and science into the study of history. At the beginning of the year students have focused on "Early European Explorers" and their interactions with Native Americans. We have talked about the perspectives of both groups of people. My students need a class set of books for a novel study on Pocahontas. My students will read at home and come to class the next day ready to discuss in a Socratic Seminar where they are leading the discussion. They will use this method to naturally grow their comprehension and analysis skills.
