My Learning Spot
Funded Dec 9, 2022Exciting participation and great conversations are what my students are experiencing while they enjoy learning on their own colorful carpet. My students and I are very grateful for your generosity as donors.
Every day, when my students enter the classroom, there will always now be a special place for them to sit and write their favorite stories, share their opinions about characters they are getting to know, and sing songs during the morning meeting. You filled our hearts with happiness, since the day the carpet was delivered into our classroom.
Thank you so much,”

Funded Apr 6, 2022Thanks to your generosity in providing more books to help us in starting new book clubs, my students and I were excited to begin and to participate every day during our reading clubs block. Having received enough sets of books really made a huge impact, which provided them with the opportunity to practice partner reading which is characterized by, sharing their thinking about the new characters they have been reading about, and leading them to have great conversations among themselves.
My students really enjoyed organizing themselves into small groups and exchanging their ideas and predictions about their perceived outcomes of their stories. They were also able to discuss the authors of the stories, and reflect upon the lessons found in them. Some of the important lessons learned were be kind, don't talk to strangers, and take care of your community and the world.”

Funded Apr 1, 2018My third grade students are just starting the Informational Text reading unit for this school year, and there is a great deal of excitement about it. All this excitement is because our classroom library has grown from having very few informational texts available to the point now of having many more books on hands, which has empowered students to learn how to find the main idea, but also to choose important supporting points that show the idea.
In the past my students always borrowed books from our school library in order to be able to access all the information needed so that they could practice independent reading on this genre. This year, thanks to your generosity, our classroom library is equipped with bins at their tables where students can read, share findings, and work in small groups. Now my third graders are learning about gorillas, penguins, whales, wolves, habitats, dangerous animals on earth, earthquakes, hurricanes, and many other interesting topics.
My students and I want to sincerely thank you for your generous donation.
Thank you for making a difference in my students' life.”

Estamos Sumidos Hasta La Rodilla Leyendo Series De Libros
Funded Oct 19, 2017My students began the school year learning about how to build powerful reading habits. They learned to recognize reading as if books were gold. They set goals in reading for the middle of the year and end of the year, and this prompted the needed to find and share books within the three -third grade sections. Thanks to your generosity, my students are now able to read books in the classroom, and also at home. They fell in love with books such as "Magic Tree House", "Stink", "Captain Underpants", "Las Hadas de la Moda", "El Hombre Mosca", etc.
During our reading block, students enjoy listening to a book read aloud for about twenty minutes a day, and then after this period of time they prepare for the mini lesson of the day. During this 10-15 minutes students learn reading strategies that they will practice once they return to their desks during our independent reading time. We also have small group readings in which students read the same book individually, and then stop and jot down notes at the end of each chapter in order to share their points of view to better monitor their own understanding, some small groups meet for guided reading which focus in improving fluency, comprehension, or vocabulary. Since our students learn in two languages, some of them require additional support in their second language.
Some of the books that we received are part of a new series called "El Inspector Cito y Chin Miedo, and El Hombre Mosca. These books were welcomed enthusiastically by my students, especially by the boys. The books included lots of graphics that entertain, but also make students more eager to read the text.
My students and I are very grateful for your thoughtfulness in providing us with books that are making a difference in their young lives. I want my students to love reading forever.”

Funded Dec 30, 2016It has been wonderful time saver having the seat pockets in my classroom. The day the box containing the seat pockets arrived at my school, I rushed from the main office to the classroom and started unpacking the box. It was early in the morning, and I wanted to have them ready and hanging from their chairs before my students would arrive. I knew we had been discussing and anticipating their arrival since the beginning of the school year, and we kept waiting... That morning, as soon as the students arrived at the door, I told them to close their eyes. Most of them listened to me, but a couple of them couldn't resist, and as soon as they saw the seat pockets they started cheering! They wanted to put their folders and bookbaggies inside immediately. They were so excited to have a place at each of their tables to store their books and folders, without having to get up and walk around the class.
Currently, we are starting our writing unit on poetry. My students are reading poems, and learning to write their own. They are becoming quite proficient at using their poets eyes, as well as music and literary language, to become authors of their own. During the month of May, we'll present our Poetry Recital for the entire school. During this recital, several students will be chosen to represent our school in June at the District Poetry Recital. Wish us luck!”
