Why should animals NOT wear clothing?
Funded Jan 18, 2023Thank you so much for your contribution to our recent project "Why should animals NOT wear clothing?" With your collective donations each child was able to receive a copy of the books "Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing" and "Lots More Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing", both by Judi and Ron Barrett, to take and keep at home. They were presented with their books at the end of our Clothing study at the Learning Celebration.
During the study, we read both of the books at our group read aloud time. They are very funny stories, and our students thoroughly enjoyed them! Several students even said, "I wish I had this book at home", which is what prompted the initiation of this project.
To celebrate our learning for the Clothing study, we used these books as a guide to create our own digital book "Why Should Animals Definitely NOT Wear Clothing?" We shared our creation with the student's families via a Google Slides presentation, and the grown ups were so impressed with our student's creativity. Here is an excerpt, "Animals should definitely not wear clothing because a shark would get it all wet!"”

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! A Book Collection
Funded Dec 27, 2017We can't thank you enough for your generosity! Because of this funded project we were able to enlarge our classroom library to include more Dr. Seuss titles. Our students loved having these books read to them by me, our 4th grade Book Buddies, & other staff members. They also enjoy looking at the books on their own, & have some of the repeated lines memorized! (Think, "I do not like green eggs & ham. I do not like them, Sam I Am!)
Our school does an annual PBL (Project Based Learning) study of selected Seuss books. Each class chooses their book & designs their study around their book. This year we chose "In a People House". It's a simple, fun beginning reader selection from Dr. Seuss. It also happened to coincide with our study of Buildings. At the culmination of the PBL, parents are invited in to see artifacts of our learning. Our parents & students worked together to make a collage art project, cutting out magazine photos & gluing on a "people house" template.
Due to your generosity, at the conclusion of our Seuss PBL parent celebration, each family received their own copy of our focus book, "In a People House". Students were thrilled, & parents were grateful! So, from all of us to all of you...THANK YOU & may you be blessed.”

This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose.org Community and 3 other donors. From Garden to Table
Funded Dec 30, 2016My students & I can't thank you enough for supporting our From Garden to Table project. Because of your generosity we were able to build our own garden beds with our own hands, plant seeds, & watch them grow!
The beds assembled very easily without the use of tools. They are made of wooden slats that fit together. We filled each bed with potting soil. The students had prepared their seedlings in advance by starting them in small containers, then transferring them to the garden beds. They planted pease, tomatoes, carrots, pumpkins, herbs, & wildflowers. Some seeds were sown directly in the beds. We kept the beds indoors until the threat of frost had passed. They are now located right outside the building by our side entrance. The students maintain them by watering, feeding, & monitoring growth.
This upcoming week will be our last one together before we dismiss for the summer. Each child will transplant their crops again so that they can take them home (to be put in the ground or a suitable container).
The adults enjoyed this project as much as the children did. Thank YOU for making it happen!”

Repurposing for Preschoolers!
Funded Sep 25, 2016Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your contribution to my project. Because of your generosity I was able to give every child in my class a copy of the book "Don't Throw That Away". This book is about ways you can reuse trash items and find a new purpose or use for them. The board book itself is made of recycled material.
During our study of Trash & Garbage, we read this book several times. It's simple presentation made it easy for my students to grasp the concept of repurposing and put it into practice in the classroom. We used a variety of trash items for art & science projects throughout the study.
At the end of each of our studies we have a learning celebration, in which we invite families to come to the classroom to see the "fruit of their children's labor". In the case of Trash & Garbage, I used our book as the focus of the celebration. Families were invited to participate in four different stations with their preschooler. Each station focused on a repurposing project that was the focus of pages in the book "Don't Throw That Away". Station 1 was: make a flower vase from an old glass jar/bottle. Station 2 was: use your parent's old clothes to make a costume (we used old tee shirts to make scarves). Station 3 was: use a plastic jug to make a bird feeder. Station 4 was: making instruments (we used K Cups for shakers & paper towel tubes for rain sticks). We had 13 families participate, and every child left with their own copy of this fantastic little book!
Thank you for helping make this study a huge success!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Lazo-Deiss
