Why not teach engineering in the primary grades? Funding this project will enhance my instruction of those engineering concepts that build on a young child’s natural curiosity and problem-solving abilities. All in all, I believe my students will be better prepared for academics and life in general if they can apply the design process to solve the future problems our society is certain to face. The engineering process is a loop that includes the following topics: IDENTIFY: What is the problem? IMAGINE: What are some solutions? Brainstorm ideas. Choose the best one. PLAN: Draw a design. Make lists of materials you will need. CREATE: Follow your plan and create something. Test it out! IMPROVE: What works? What doesn't? What could work better? Modify your design to make it better. Test it out again! Each Real-World Challenge kit comes with creative materials that introduce a problem that is engaging to a young child ( i.e. saving a town from a flash flood, rescuing a toy bear from a well and guiding a family safely across a bridge), as well as a variety of materials to brainstorm, plan and build with. The kits become progressively harder as the go on.
