Our school offers a wonderful opportunity for students to create artwork with fire clay. Currently, our classroom has the basic equipment of a kiln, earthenware clay, glaze, and simple ceramic tools. Within a forty-five-minute period, students receive instruction and work with clay exploring their creativity while constructing artwork. The addition of a slab roller to our classroom would enable students to form larger slabs of clay than they are physically capable with a rolling pin. A slab-roller in our ceramic room would enable students to create more complex artwork and reach the diverse needs of students. Students can explore their creativity with evenly rolled slabs of clay to produce dynamic tiles, design original slab cups, and functional artwork using slump/hump molds, as well as constructing an original sculpture.
