Working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, my students work together to find solutions to real problems. They have the equipment, but one thing is missing: the "white coat." It is my goal to present our third-year students with a lab coat, signifying their dedication to the program. We will hold a white coat ceremony for our students, emphasizing the importance of the white coat. This will include a guest speaker, recitation of an oath, and the presentation of the lab coat. Lab coats for my third-year students will help create an air of professionalism and give a sense of purpose to the work students are doing. They will no longer be students in a classroom but professionals working in a lab. If they are performing the same lab skills, using the same equipment, they should have the same dress. We teach students from day one in year one about PPE - personal protective equipment. Students wear gloves and goggles, but they are missing the coat. Once students reach the third year in the program, the labs become more technical, prevalent, and microbial. From streaking bacteria to isolating proteins to performing PCR, the lab coats will be part of their every day PPE.
