My students started a small garden and have gained so much for caring for it. We have done related projects in Math, Science, Language Arts, Art and lots of delicious cooking! An expanded sensory garden will provide opportunities to enhance all aspects of our learning and allow students with physical challenges to participate fully. It has been challenging for students with wheelchairs and walkers to access low planters, but that never deterred them from wanting to get involved. Planters designed to accommodate them and a suitable ground surface of interlocking tiles will allow them to join in activities easily without drawing attention to their differences. Our new garden will not only encourage academic growth but give the students a sense of pride and responsibility. They enjoy working in the garden with potting soil and garden seats, and it can be a useful behavior management tool. We will also be inviting general education peers to join us to help with social skills and inclusion for all students.
