As a second grade teacher, in our school district it is my responsibility to teach physical education to my students. I've always led an active lifestyle and want to instill the love of movement in my students. I believe it starts with exposing students to fundamental skills and building a foundation of fitness that they can build upon. I'd like to use different types of sports equipment to offer my students a variety of activities to work on during P.E. Those activities would help with coordination, endurance, and teamwork while participating in enjoyable structured physical education lessons. I'd like to add ball hops, platform stilts, catch pads, belt pulls and volleyballs so I can expand my current curriculum. This year I made it a goal to teach P.E. with the purpose of building this foundation for my students. I'll never forget a very excited student telling me, after we worked on dribbling a basketball for a few days, "Mrs. P., I can play basketball now!"
The majority of my students have limited access to structured outdoor play or activities. They resort to playing chase, good guys/ bad guys, or just sitting around talking with a friend. It's important for them to have positive outlets to release extra energy and all the stress from the demands of our daily classroom curriculum. I look forward to introducing various activities that will help them lead a healthy and active lifestyle. This new equipment will provide me many options for what we learn during P.E. Additionally, it will bring smiles to my students' faces, and I know they'll continue to ask me, "Are we going to P.E. today?!"
